Nōga @ Rē
Welcome to the next evolution to your workout….Nōga.
Nōga is a combination of dynamic, resistive, and static stretching that can be utilized to enhance your health and flexibility. Based on established physiological and energetic anatomical principals, Nōga embraces the musculoskeletal and fascial systems of the body with a neuromuscular focus, which embraces all of the body’s systems. It is based on the kinetic chains of the body, not a given position or pose – Nōga focuses on increasing your strength through flexibility.
Unlike other, more ‘alternative’ flexibility systems, Nōga has no spiritual component, no meditative, mystical or dramatic elements to distract you from your goal. It is a non-competitive, non-traditional approach to flexibility and conditioning that allows you to acknowledge and increase your personal potential. Nōga is not your mother’s yoga!
Benefits of Nōga:
- corrects muscle imbalances
- increases joint range of motion
- decreases excessive tension in muscles
- relieves joint stress
- improves resilience of the musculoskeletal system
- maintains the normal functional length of all muscles
- improves optimal neuromuscular efficiency
- improves overall performance
What to expect
Nōga is a progressively challenging stretching class. All stretches will be modified to accommodate existing altered neuromuscular functions and special attention will be paid to correcting those. Practitioners of Nōga experience an increase in energy level and a “lightness” following the session. Please wear loss fitting clothes. Bring an exercise mat, a towel and maybe a bottle of water. As said, Nōga is challenging, but worth it.
Nōga focuses on 3 measurable Goals:
Strength: studies indicate that an increase in flexibility increase in strength with no additional strength training: a 1999 study by Wayne L. Westcott, Ph.D. and Rita La Rose Loud, B.S found that participants who performed both strength training and stretching attained almost 19 percent more hamstring strength than the participants who performed strength training only.Endurance: Nōga reduces chances of injury by creating optimal neuromuscular performance: "Your calves get tight from moving forward, and then you start bending everywhere else. That's when the injuries start.”—Arnie Kandor, P.T.; Head strength and conditioning coach, Detroit Pistons.
Nōga addresses the injuries and the injury cycle by increasing flexibility and by addressing the fascial lines in the body and creates symmetrical flexibility, reducing the chance of injury and correcting the injury once it has occurred. A 1998 study conducted by Cibulka et al, found that in a cross section of 100 patients with non-specific back pain, the majority demonstrated unilateral hip rotation or asymmetrical flexibility.
Longevity: Facts are facts - one: The body wants to be flexible and active. Two: a major component of competeition is mental acutity and attitude. Nōga can reduce the most frustrating side effects of aging: reduced flexibility and fatigue. Can Nōga make you a premier athlete? By itself , no, but can it help reduce the factors standing between your aging body and optimal perfomance. Also, Nōga increases a passive energy boost - not a 'runner's high' or an 'endorphin rush' - many people report an increase in energy immediately after a Nōga session, lasting several hours! Cary Bayer says in his book The Zen of Sports, "Don’t buy into the low thoughts of others which say that your body must break down at certain ages."
Nōga classes are scheduled Wednesday evenings, 6:30 to 7:30pm; Monday mornings 8:30 to 9:30am; and every other Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30am. Scheduling is possible by clicking the 'schedule now' button at the top of the page. Class size is limited to six (6) participants per class. It is the philosophy of Rē to keep the instructor / student ratio small, so we can provide a sincere and focused class experience for all.
Other classes in this series: Nōga for Golf, Nōga for Tennis, and Nōga for Runners (Dates and times TBA)
